The Thumb
Previously we have discussed the lengths of the fingers in relation to each other, and we do the same here for the thumb. Palmists consider the optimum length of the thumb to be long enough to reach the middle of the first joint of the first finger. a thumb that is shorter than this indicates a weaker willed and less [mentally] developed person according to palmists.
The thumb, in the relaxed hand, stands off from the rest of the hand, at an angle called the angle of generosity. As one might expect from the name of this angle, the farther from the hand that the thumb stands, the more generous a person is perceived to be. The closer the more selfish. It is easy to project this generosity into the idea of not only financial interests, but also love interests. If a person has a thumb which normally, in a relaxed hand, stands far out from the hand, that person is perceived to be a more loving and caring person than one whose thumb is held close in. Thumbs that not only don't naturally separate, but actually cross under the palm when the hand is at rest, indicate a high level of anxiety and fear.
A thumb should be flexible, and be easily able to touch the fourth finger at the top of each when bent in, unless other medical conditions interfere with full range of motion, (arthritis, fractures, etc.). The actual range of motion in the thumb, (medical conditions excluded) indicates the person’s ability to accept change, and new ideas. The ability to bend the top joint back (without causing pain), can be used as a measure of the person’s ability to adapt.
The thumb is divided into three bones physiologically, and three corresponding sections by palm readers. The top section represents the will to the palmist. A narrow and flat top section is indicative of a weak will. As the thumb’s top section appears fuller and rounder, the person’s will is considered to be more "normal." When the top section of the thumb is overly round, it is believed that the person is overly willful. The middle section of the thumb represents logic to the chiromancer. The ideal form for the middle section of the thumb, according to palmists, is relatively thin representing good sound logic. As the middle section of the thumb appears fatter and rounder, less ideal characteristics of logic are attributed to the person attached to the thumb. The bottom segment of the thumb is related to love and emotions. The more developed, the more emotional the person will tend to be. The lower third of the thumb is almost entirely within the palm, and so the development of this section appears as the development of the ball of the palm.
The overall length of the thumb and the relation of the sections to each other also indicate various characteristics. The overall length of the thumb is considered to indicate mental development and/or willfulness. The longer a person’s thumb is, the greater the development of the individual in both mental capabilities and willfulness of that person. When it comes to the relationships between the sections, the dominance in length of any section over the others indicates the dominance of that characteristic over the other(s).
